MODIFIED LAWS FOR SMALL SIDED GAMES
LAW 1 – THE FIELD:
A. Dimensions:
The field of play shall be rectangular, its length being not more than 50
yards nor less than 40 yards and its width not more than 30 yards nor less
than 20 yards. The length in all cases shall exceed the width.
Recommendations:
Length: 50 yards Width: 30 yards (1/4 of a full size field) For Div 4 and up.
Length: 40 yards Width: 30 yards. For Divisions 5 and lower.
B. Markings:
1. Distinctive lines necessary, sidelines and endlines.
2. A halfway line can be marked out across the field or otherwise
indicated.
3. While other markings are possible, they are not required to ensure the
enjoyment and development of the youngsters.
a. A center circle with a six (6) yard radius.
b. Four corner arcs with a two (2) foot radius.
c. Goal area – six (6) yards up the touch lines and joined by a line drawn
parallel with the goal line.
C. Goals:
Maximum: Six (6) feet high and twelve (12) feet wide.
LAW 2 – THE BALL: Size four (4).
LAW 3 – NUMBER OF PLAYERS:
A. Maximum number of players on the field at any one time:
Five (5). With goalkeeper.
B. Maximum number of players on the roster should not exceed eight (8).
C. Substitutions:
1. Injuries.
2. See LAW V11.
D. Playing time: Each player SHALL play a minimum of 50% of the total
playing time.
LAW 4 – PLAYERS EQUIPMENT:
Conform to FIFA with the following exceptions:
A. Footwear: Soft-cleared soccer boots (shoes)
B. Shinquards – Mandatory
LAW 5 – REFEREE:
A. Registered Referees: These are possible.
B. Associate Referees: These are possible.
C. Parent/Coach or Assistant. This is the most logical choice.
D. All rule infractions shall be briefly explained to the offending player.
LAW 6 – AR: Not necessary.
LAW 7 – DURATION OF GAME:
A. The game shall be divided into four (4) equal twelve (12) minute quarters.
B. There shall be a two (2) minute break between quarter one (1) and quarter
two (2), and another two minute break between quarter three (3) and four (4).
C. There shall be a half-time break of five (5) minutes between quarters two (2)
three (3).
D. Parent/coaches there will be free substitutions, try to ensure that all players present play a minimum of 50% of the game.
LAW 8 – THE START OF PLAY:
Conform to FIFA with the following exceptions:
A. Opponents must be six (6) yards from the center mark while kick off is in
progress.
LAW 9 – BALL IN AND OUT OF PLAY: Conform to FIFA.
LAW 10 – METHOD OF SCORING:
Conform to FIFA with the following exceptions:
A. A goalkeeper may not score a goal directly from a goal kick or a drop kick.
LAW 11 – OFFSIDE: There will be no off-side.
LAW 12 – FOULS AND MISCONDUCT:
Conform to FIFA with the following exceptions:
A. All fouls will result in an INDIRECT FREE KICK with the opponents six
(6) yards away.
B. The Referee must explain ALL infractions to the offending player.
LAW 13 – FREE KICKS:
Conform to FIFA with the following exceptions:
A. Shall be classified under one heading – INDIRECT.
B. A goal may not be scored until the ball has been played or touched by a
second player of either team.
C. No kicks shall be taken by the attacking team within the defending team’s
goal box.
LAW 14 – PENALTY KICKS:
A. If a penalty kick occurs it will be taken from the half way line with no
goalkeeper.
LAW 15 – THROW-IN:
A. A second throw-in must be allowed if the player commits a foul on initial
attempt. The Referee shall explain the proper method before allowing the
player to re-throw.
LAW 16 – GOAL KICKS:
Conform to FIFA with the following exceptions:
A. Goal kick must be taken on the goal line.
B. Opponents must be six (6) yards away from the ball.
LAW 17 – CORNER KICKS:
Conform to FIFA with the following exceptions:
A. Opponents must be six (6) yards away from the ball.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
A. Opposing parent/ coaches and players should shake hands after each game.
B. Do not record league standings.
C. Do not record final score.
